The next day, most of the staff members arrived early. Three people failed to turn up. The ones who did were anxious to know what was going to happen. It gave some of them the creeps to think Ivy had died so suddenly and in the office.

Ashley stood up. “First of all, I think it would be nice if we had a minute’s silence for Ivy to show our respect.”

Everyone bowed their heads for sixty seconds.

Ashley continued. “We don’t know what Ivy’s husband is going to do. So, for now, I feel we need to carry on as best we can. I’m sure he will be in touch, but personally, I don’t feel like contacting him at this point. I’m sure he has other things on his mind. And besides, we owe it to the clients of the company. For them, life goes on.”

Every day was always busy, with the phones starting to ring from nine o’clock, and today was no exception.

At a few minutes past noon, a man in an expensive suit, with an official look to him, walked into the office.

He placed his briefcase down by his side. Then, in a loud voice, he said, “Excuse me, everyone, could I have your attention, please? Those of you on the phone, please finish your business and then if you would gather round. I’m the company solicitor, Stephen Franks.”

Once all the calls had been finished, the team members gathered around where he stood.

“Thank you all. I’m obviously here after the sad loss of Ivy Upton.

“It appears, although she hoped to discuss her situation with you all, things moved faster than anyone could anticipate. She had spoken to her husband about what would happen. As you can imagine, he is in shock right now, so he has asked me to come down here and assure you all that the business will continue. Everyone will get paid as usual, and he asks if you can continue running the company until he feels able to take things over.

“I will leave my details, and if any of you have any problems, I would ask you to contact me, and I will sort them out.

“The funeral date hasn’t been arranged yet, but you will be told when it is, and if you wish to attend, you will be most welcome. The office will be closed on the day as a mark of respect. Do any of you have any questions?”

Everyone remained silent.

Mr Franks passed out a sheet of paper with his contact details, then picked up his briefcase and left.

An hour later, as Ashley was sitting at her desk eating the lunch she had brought in, two girls came over.

“Hey, Ashley. We just wondered what you are planning to do. Will you stay, or will you look for something else now?”

“For the moment, I have no plans to leave. I think that would be a problem for the company, and I wouldn’t want to do anything that would cause a complication. Why do you ask?”

“Now that Ivy isn’t here, we’re worried about what will happen.
